Augmented and Virtual Reality: The Future of Territorial Attractiveness Begins in Schools<\/h4>

As the world changes every day, so do its demands to thrive in it. \u00a0Today, technology has overtaken every aspect of both our professional and personal lives, and it requires from the new generations to adapt to this reality, and learn how to manage it.<\/p>

This is why digital education in school is meeting unprecedented attention. As nowadays children in the first world societies begin to use mobile phones and computers and access the internet before they even go to school, it is becoming increasingly important to educate them on the use of this digital power and provide them with the resources they need to master them for their futures. Nowadays more than ever before, it is vital to integrate the topics of digital culture and skills within educational pathways in a way that responds to the challenges and needs of the digital transformation of the society, the economy and the labor market.<\/p>

Digital education has been in the focus of European Union projects for many years, with several partnerships and actions being taken on a local, national and international level. Such an endeavor is the AURORA project (AUgmeted Reality OERs for Regional Attractiveness), a ground-breaking effort that responds to the demand for digital transformation and career education and training in the tourism and cultural sectors. The project intends to connect students with local businesses, provide them with fundamental technical skills for new careers in the industry, and contribute to the preservation of regional and European cultural heritage.<\/p>

As part of AURORA\u2019s implementation process, which began in early 2023, a survey was carried out in the participant countries of Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, as well as shared to participants throughout Europe. The survey provided questionnaires to students, teachers and companies of each country, with the aim to draw observations on the participants\u2019 experience with new technologies such as Augmented and Virtual Reality, the current state of the institutions they\u2019re a part of and what their opinions are on the integration of digital education for these technologies into their everyday life and work.<\/p>

The findings of the survey showed a general degree of familiarity among participants when it comes to AR and VR: most of them had some knowledge of it, some had experienced it or applied it to their work. Teachers in particular stated that they didn\u2019t feel qualified enough to implement these technologies in their classroom, although they generally seemed willing to be trained on the education and application during their classes.<\/p>

Despite the positive views and willingness of the participants, the current situation isn\u2019t favorable. According to the participants\u2019 responses, both school and companies lack the equipment, education, training and application necessary to make AR and VR a part of their proceedings. Teachers expressed hesitations about using AR and VR technologies in class and stated that their institutions surely do not hold a sufficient technological level, considering modern demands.<\/p>

Company representatives were better informed about Augmented and Virtual reality, and understood the value of them for uses such as virtual product promotion, e-commerce and immersive touristic experiences, however they exhibited an equal lack of application as the other target groups. Companies were also asked about existing and missing professional skills for the development of the territory, on which they ranked ICT skills, digital and programming skills, education and leadership skills among the most important and needed qualities for a professional to have.<\/p>

Overall, the final questionnaire report which merged the data and observations from each national survey, showed a gap between students\u2019 and teachers\u2019 desire to learn about the new Augmented and Virtual Reality technologies and the availability of educational and material resources of their institutions. Both groups consider it a prerequisite that assets such as VR headsets, digital tools and information guides\/handbooks should be provided by school systems in order for the digital education to take tangible form and provide results. \u00a0If the necessary tools and opportunities are provided, present students will be able to acquire the knowledge and tech skills they need to harness the future and bring a very desirable skillset to the labor market, transforming sectors such as tourism and culture for the better.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

These ideas gave rise to the AURORA project (AUgmented Reality OERs for Regional Attractiveness), which aims to:<\/span><\/p>
  • provide students with basic technical skills expendable in the labor market for new professions in the tourism and cultural sector;<\/span><\/li>
  • connect students with local companies, interpreting their needs and understanding the real future employment and development possibilities;<\/li>
